Bringing Vision to Reality: The Creation of CyberRob

Creating a realistic 3D character for Unreal Engine can be complex, but with the latest software and tools, it's easier than ever.

In the past, game development required a team of dozens, but now, thanks to advancements in technology, even one person can create a full video game, along with realistic characters and environments. I got into 3D character design in early 2020; right before the pandemic hit. I started with organic 3D sculpting in Blender, which lead to about a dozen other 3D programs, all culminating into Unreal Engine.

With Unreal Engine's suite of powerful tools and a slew of other 3D sculpting and painting programs, I was able to sculpt and shape the character's face and body to my liking, making precise adjustments to its skin, hair, and lighting to achieve the most accurate likeness possible. As I continued to work on the character, it slowly began to take on more and more of my features, until I had created an impressively accurate digital double of myself. The process was challenging, but ultimately incredibly fulfilling, and a testament to the power of digital art to capture the essence of the physical form.

Bringing CyberRob to life in the Cyber City environment was so much fun. I carefully positioned the character, adjusted the lighting, and fine-tuned its movements and animations to ensure a natural, lifelike appearance. Filming and rendering the shots of CyberRob in the environment was a blast, as I experimented with camera angles, lighting, and renderer settings to produce some truly stunning images and videos. The end result was worth all the hard work, as CyberRob looked realistic and true to life. Creating this character from scratch was an remarkable experience, one that required a lot of effort and time, but was also incredibly enjoyable and rewarding.
